New camera app
Adobe plans to release a new camera app aimed at more "professional" photographers who want to take their smartphone photos to the next level.
In an interview with CNET, Marc Levoy, Vice President of Adobe, said that the planned application will offer new computational photography options.
Levoy said he wants to make an app for people who are willing to put more effort into getting a great photo. It will be aimed at people who "have experience with traditional camera settings such as autofocus, shutter speed, color, focal length and aperture."
Levoy was previously a researcher at Stanford University who is credited with coining the term "computational photography." He later joined the Google Pixel team where he led smartphone camera designs such as artificial background blur and panorama stitching.
"What I did at Google was 'democratize' good photography," Levoy tells CNET. "What I'd like to do at Adobe is democratize creative photography, where there's more action between the photographer and the camera."
“Computational” photography has certainly improved the quality of smartphone cameras. Achieved transformation of images taken from an inferior sensor, in AI photo processing, to a point of quality that can compete with traditional DSLRs.
Levoy adds that Adobe is targeting "photographers who want to think a little more carefully about the photo they're taking and are willing to interact a little more with the camera while they're shooting."
Levoy has yet to confirm any of the app's features, but indicated that the company is working on a new feature aimed at removing reflections from photos taken through windows.
It also looks at photo relighting, a new approach to 'super resolution', stacking multiple photos and even looking at new ways of how photos are viewed.
The as-yet-unnamed app is expected to be released within a year or two.
