Adobe Photoshop for Apple M1
Apple’s new Macs with M1 processors were a revelation for the tech world when they were released last November, with users and critics alike marveling at their speed. For digital artists, it’s important that creative software matches the hardware, but Photoshop for M1 Macs has only been available in an unsupported beta form – until now.
Adobe has announced that the first version of Photoshop that runs natively on M1 Macs is now available. If you already own the latest MacBook Pro or Air (both of our best laptops for graphic design), get ready for a much improved Photoshop experience.
According to Adobe: “Internal testing shows a wide range of capabilities running on average 1.5 times the speed of previous-generation systems with a similar configuration.”
Performance & Speed
From everyday actions like opening and saving files and running filters to intensive tasks like Content-Aware Fill, Adobe claims that M1 Photoshop responds noticeably faster.
Adobe also notes that there are some recent features that haven't yet been ported to M1, such as Invite to Edit Cloud Documents and Preset Syncing. However, any users who require access to these tools can easily fall back to Rosetta 2 (the software Apple uses to run Intel apps on M1 chips) until they're added to the official release.
Adobe Photoshop for M1 thus confirms how exciting Apple's new M1 is for creative artists. It makes previously slow and labor-intensive tasks faster than ever and transforms users' workflows.
