Mobile Viewpoint provided Sky Sports News with the ability to broadcast first-hand, live reporting and advanced analysis from the ground. Sky Sports News used a selection of Mobile Viewpoint products, including Agile LiveLink and Playout 2KX, which allowed journalists to broadcast live from each of the 20 Premier League teams across the country.
Sky Sports News in Italy and Germany also used the same Mobile Viewpoint technology, enabling the three channels to share content between countries seamlessly and simultaneously.
The success of the January 2017 Football Transfer Deadline Day broadcast marks another year of successful collaboration between Mobile Viewpoint and Sky Sports News. The two companies began working together in the summer of 2013, when Sky Sports News sought an electronic news gathering (ENG) solution that was flexible and did not require the use of satellite news gathering (SNG) vehicles. Since then, the two companies have worked closely together to successfully deliver a number of broadcasts.
Flexibility in Coverage of Sports Events and News
Ian Brash, Technical Director at Sky Sports News, explains: “Mobile Viewpoint products have given us the flexibility we need to compete, especially during an event as fast-paced and important as the January 2017 Football Transfer Deadline Day. All we needed was to send a reporter and a cameraman with a camera and a Mobile Viewpoint unit without the need for additional equipment or crew. This has made us much faster in the way we broadcast and gives us an advantage when it comes to broadcasting from abroad. More importantly, it means we can continue to provide the best sports coverage and news to our viewers.
“We have also seen significant cost savings through the use of Mobile Viewpoint products, mainly because we are not relying on SNG vehicles, which are expensive to operate, staff and maintain. Instead of having only six vehicles, we are simultaneously using 20 Mobile Viewpoint units, which cost us less than 1 vehicle.”
