Discover which control protocol suits your needs
Choosing a PTZ camera doesn’t end with its technical specifications: the control technology that accompanies it is what can make or break its performance. Whether you’re setting up a remote learning room or planning a multi-camera broadcast production, the correct choice of control protocol can determine the success of your installation and operation.
Knowing how do cameras communicate With our expertise, you can make smarter and future-proof choices, ensuring that your system is flexible, easy to integrate, and ready for the next steps in your production.
🎛 RS-232: The “good old” way
It was developed by Sony and is based on a serial connection.
✔️ Reliable, ideal for fixed installations
❌ Distance & scalability limitation
🔧 Suitable for: local AV setups, low-budget solutions
🌐 VISCA over IP: Network connection
The evolution of RS-232, but via Ethernet.
✔️ Two-way communication, easy integration into networks
❌ Requires manual IP configuration
🔧 Suitable for: broadcast & pro AV environments with feedback requirements
🧠 NDI: The modern way (and our favorite)
In addition to controlling cameras, it transfers video, audio, tally and metadata with a single cable.
✔️ Plug-and-play, auto-discovery, perfect integration with TriCaster, OBS, vMix
❌ Requires attention to bandwidth
🔧 Suitable for: streaming, live productions, modern network workflows
🧩 Brand Agnostic Controllers
Controllers that support multiple protocols (NDI, VISCA, RS-422, ONVIF) without being limited to one manufacturer.
✅ They give you the flexibility to work with cameras from different manufacturers
✅ Ideal for conference rooms, studios, churches or rental kits
📡 Other Protocols (that are good to know)
- ONVIF: for basic control of IP cameras
- Pelco–D/P: formerly, for CCTV
- UVC / Web UI / APIs: for USB, cloud or integration into touch systems
👉 Why at Comart we prefer NDI;
Because it unifies. One cable, one protocol, one network. And your entire production, from cameras to graphics, speaks the same language. The future of AV is IP, and NDI is already ready.
